Job – Chapter 21
Why Do Bad Things Happen To Good People, And Why Do Good Things Happen To Bad People?
So, it seems as if Job is upset with his friends because they are making attribution errors. It sounds like they are saying to him if God takes away your prosperity, then somehow you must have done something wrong and you are a hypocrite. I guess they are looking for the cause and effect relationship. Job is wisely trying to point out how we often see people, who want nothing to do with God, prospering from doing bad things. At least they seem prosperous while on earth. So, if his friends are saying that if prosperity is taken away, then you must have done something bad. Therefore, the natural extension of this is that if we are prosperous, then we must be good or righteous. However, this clearly isn’t the case, and this is what Job is trying to point out.
So, this makes me think about the questions people always ask: why do bad things happen to good people, and why do good things happen to bad people? In the end, I guess its all about God and how God can be glorified through the things that we experience regardless of wether we experience joy or pain.
