7 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge,
but fools despise wisdom and instruction.
For King Solomon, who was the wisest man in all land to make a statement that the fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, credence has to be given to it. What then is fear of the Lord? What does it mean to fear God? Is fearing God an “old testament” term where people are punished physically when we disobey God?
There are multiple examples of “fear of the Lord” in the New Testament.
“Don’t you fear God?” (Luke 23:40) – When one criminal rebuked the other for scoffing at Jesus on the Cross.
“continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling” Phil 2:12 – Paul addressing the Phillipians
“love the brotherhood of believers, fear God, honor the king” 1 Peter 2:17 – Apostle Peter urging Christians
I think these days we lack the fear of the Lord. We see God as a provider, a comforter, a Savior, a strong and mighty King, but we do not have that reverence and fear of Him. I believe once we re-approach this truth, we will begin to be more wise in our ways.
