16 One who oppresses the poor to increase his wealth
and one who gives gifts to the rich—both come to poverty.
This is an interesting verse. The first verse, oppressing the poor to increase one’s wealth would lead to poverty seems pretty obvious. God is righteous and there are many instances where He promises to protect the weak, the poor and the social outcasts.
The second verse however seems more obscure. One who gives gifts to the rich, will come to poverty. Who are considered the rich? What is the context or reasoning behind giving gifts that would lead to poverty? One can imagine two high powered people exchanging monetary/other advantagous gifts for less than honarary intentions as being penalized for such actions. But to bring it to another level, are we ourselves only giving gifts to people who are in our comfort circle? And instead ignoring the poor and the needy? Giving gifts to one another especially for pure intentions are fine. But let us not forget the true meaning of Christmas and who he came to Earth for.
