Psalm 106

19 At Horeb they made a calf
and worshiped an idol cast from metal.

20 They exchanged their glorious God
for an image of a bull, which eats grass.

21 They forgot the God who saved them,
who had done great things in Egypt,

22 miracles in the land of Ham
and awesome deeds by the Red Sea.

Whenever I read this passage, I am often times bemused about how easy the Israelites forget their God. Not only has God miraculously led them away from the Egyptians in spectacular and out-worldly ways, He provided for their needs also. Sometimes I figured to myself, if God had done such a tangible and real miracle in front of me, I would definitely have no doubts about His power and providence when going through daily struggles.

Here however, the Israelites, did quite the opposite. They not only forgot what God had done, but they added insult to injury by making an idol of an animal that God created. They exchanged the glory of God for an image of His creation. How crazy is that?!

When I look to myself, I realize that I am not that different from these people. I too am equally guilty of making an idol tat I ‘worship’. Today’s idol is security in the form of money, personal possessions that keep me within my comfort zone, friend I keep close, relationships, time… All these things which I hold dear I have to remember not to put above and before God.

Otherwise, we will be worshiping the creation of the creator. We would be giving up our glorious God.
