Psalm 89: 30-52
30 “If his sons forsake my law
and do not follow my statutes,
31 if they violate my decrees
and fail to keep my commands,
32 I will punish their sin with the rod,
their iniquity with flogging;
33 but I will not take my love from him,
nor will I ever betray my faithfulness.
34 I will not violate my covenant
or alter what my lips have uttered.
35 Once for all, I have sworn by my holiness—
and I will not lie to David—
36 that his line will continue forever
and his throne endure before me like the sun;
37 it will be established forever like the moon,
the faithful witness in the sky.”
The Lord reaffirms the covenant made with King David. That King David’s line will be preserved forever. Although they have broken their end of the covenant, the Lord still loves them. No doubt sin has its consequences. Later in the chapter, the author goes on to exclaim how the nation has suffered as a result of their rebellion and how they felt a distance from God even though God had made the covenant with them. Interestingly he praises God at the very end of the chapter despite all the other pleas before that.
However, we do know that God had indeed preserved King David’s inheritance through Jesus Christ, and how it will be established forever.
When you feel like you are being punished, or are going through difficult circumstances, remember that God loves you and will keep His end of the covenant forever.
