Song of Solomon 8
1 If only you were to me like a brother,
who was nursed at my mother’s breasts!
Then, if I found you outside,
I would kiss you,
and no one would despise me.
In oriental culture, even a married couple cannot express their love publicly… only a brother and sister could kiss openly. We start SOS8 with the wife wishing she had the right to show their love to the world. Aw.
6 Place me like a seal over your heart,
like a seal on your arm;
for love is as strong as death,
its jealousy unyielding as the grave.
It burns like blazing fire,
like a mighty flame.
Death takes away everything and yields to no one. Once you are under the power of death, there is no escape. Similarly with love. It takes over your life, like a blazing fire, it cannot be doused. We are reminded that love must be treated with the greatest caution and respect.
Question for the couples, do you wish to be a sister/brother with your loved one so that your love can be openly expressed? (hehe)
Second question for the couples, do you feel love is like a blazing fire? Should love be unrestrained or approached cautiously?
Third question for all, is there such a thing as true (humanly) love?
